Transforming Abandoned Buildings into New Schools

The provincial governments in Balochistan had constructed a large number of buildings, including schools and others under the Public Sector Development Program or PSDP. Most of these buildings were constructed without rationalization or need assessment, therefore most of them were left unattended. Some of the buildings amounted to a cost worth millions of dollars in value and importance of location. With the passage of time and population changes, most of these buildings required operationalization to meet the increasing demand of schools from the community. With depleting resources of the government and development agencies, utilizing these buildings has become imperative. This initiative required a bold decision of going on a complicated path of officially obtaining these buildings for revitalization into schools as they were either occupied by other departments or used for other purposes by the community or left abandoned. BEP: Making Use of WhatsApp

Given the huge number of people using smartphones and on-the-go internet, Balochistan Education Project ceased the opportunity to take full advantage of this technology by utilizing social media like Facebook and communication tools like WhatsApp to communicate with people, employees and government counterparts in an innovative way. BEP has created more than 10 different WhatsApp groups, ranging from regional teams, staff safety and security related group to a group that comprises of the highest authorities in Education including Secretary Education who is the senior-most official of the department. These groups also comprise of regional groups of the project teams working in far flung districts of the province that will otherwise take at least two days to travel from one end to the other by road.
